Youth skilling is the practice of providing young people with the skills and training they need to succeed in the workforce. This can include things like vocational training, apprenticeships, and other educational programs that teach practical job skills. The goal of youth skilling is to help young people transition from school to work, and to give them the tools they need to succeed in their careers. The challenge of unemployment for youth who do not complete school is even greater.
Youth are left behind at an alarming rate. While the number of youth ages 15-24 has grown 30% over the last 20 years, their participation in the labour force has decreased by approximately 12% (ILO, 2020). Of those that are employed, many are in the informal economy holding jobs that are commonly characterised by low pay, hazardous working conditions, and little job security. Of the youth with formal employment, many are underemployed, or their skills do not align with employers’ needs. In addition to losing youth from labour force, youth unemployment and underemployment also have broader societal implications, including helping to deepen polarization, erode institutional trust, and generate social unrest. Youth are uninformed about the job market and the local economy. Many report not knowing what sort of skills and goods are marketable and identify social challenges as being very concerning.
As DCG we discovered that the youth face so many barriers in their journey to success and many times, the root cause is lack of capital and skills needed in the labour market therefore many youth from vulnerable backgrounds are also not able to complete their education and some drop out of school and some suffer from early pregnancies which leads to poverty thus once they are skilled they are able to live a poverty free life
The DCG skilling program employs different approaches and methods to effectively equip youth with sustainable practical livelihood and vocational skills.
The training is handled using any or some or all of the following approaches:
DCG skilling has very many skilled and experienced youth in different fields of catering, hand and craft, tailoring, saloon, cosmetics, laundry making etc
These youth they do mobilization, needs assessment, skilling and monitoring and evaluation
