Disability is the umbrella term covering impairment, and activity limitation and participation limitation
Over a billion people are estimated to live with some form of disability. This corresponds to about 15% of the world’s population. They are many types of disabilities and they include vision, movement, thinking, remembering, learning, communicating, hearing and social relations.
And to a certain extent some problems of PWDs produce other problems. And because of this problem DCG skilling decided to consider so much PWDs in order to provide them with employable skills and economic empowerment fostering innovation, resilience and self-reliance.
Skilling people with Disability is the practice of providing PWD’s with the skills and training they need to succeed in the workforce. This can include things like vocational training, apprenticeships, and other educational programs that teach practical job skills. The goal for skilling PWD’s is to help in habitation and enable them to have independent living.
In Uganda, an estimated 12% of the population have a disability yet 22% of unemployed Ugandans have a disability. Research indicates that persons with disabilities have less opportunity for employment, particularly as the economy is dominated by subsistence farming. This is an important factor in understanding the high levels of poverty among people with disabilities:
In Uganda, a bigger percentage of Persons with Disability (15-59years) are either unemployed or are marginal workers. Persons with Disability face numerous challenges that withhold them from having a barrier-free life. Low accessibility to special education, difficulties in migrating to urban areas, inaccessible buildings and transportation facilities, skill gap and negative stereotypes make them vulnerable. These challenges have curtailed their progress towards having a decent life and kept them out of mainstream employment for long.
The role of DCG is to enable people with disabilities to access work opportunities, by actively promoting and facilitating the acquisition of relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes which would reduce unemployment, alleviate poverty and grow economic inclusion among persons with disabilities to prepare them for future employment which would lead to their productivity and wellbeing
